The 2017 Laverton NAIDOC Celebrations were a big success and provided an opportunity for Community to come together and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Culture. The theme for 2017 NAIDOC was "Our Languages Matter" and Laverton recognised this theme throughout the week through a Welcome Song in Language, performed by the local children at the NAIDOC Opening Ceremony and through the opening speech by Aboriginal Elder, Mrs Doreen Harris who spoke of the link between language and culture and the importance of teaching children their local tongue so it can continue to be passed down from generation to generation and not be lost.

This years activities hosted by the Shire ofLaverton included the Community Opening Ceremony, Auskick and Netball Community Garnes an Elders Dinner, Cultural Day Out Bush and a Superhero's Costume Parade for the young children. Other activities included a Women's CookUp hosted by One Tree and a closing Ceremony hosted by the Laverton, Leonora Cross Cultural Association.

The Shire of La.verton Community Resource Centre would like to thank the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, Local Drug Action Group and the Laverton Leonora Cross Cultural Association for their support funding as without this the week activities would not have been possible. We would also like to thank the Great Beyond Visitor Centre, La.verton Youth Services and Laverton Sports Chili, the Curtin Volunteers, Sue Finney from Lynas Corporation, Meedac, St John's Ambulance and the other many volunteers who donated their time to the week celebrations.
